By Craig Smith
“Jesus took some bread and gave thanks to God for it. Then He broke it in pieces and said, ‘This is my body, which is given for you. Do this to remember me.’ In the same way, He took the cup of wine after supper, saying, ‘This cup is the new covenant between God and His people—an agreement confirmed with my blood. Do this to remember me as often as you drink it.’”
1 Corinthians 11:23-25
Lord Jesus, you command us to do this so that we might remember.
But how could we ever forget?
If you had not come and established your New Covenant, all of humanity would still be hopelessly lost. As we celebrate this divine ordinance, Holy Communion . . .
We remember the shallow, fruitless vanity of our self-focused lives.
We remember how helpless we were to change or redeem ourselves.
We remember how your sacrifice transformed an old story into a fresh, personal encounter--the pinnacle of relationship and doorway to an indescribable destiny.
We remember your immeasurable grace and mercy and are filled with humility and gratitude.
We remember the cross, the grave and the way that you made for us.
Yes, we remember how your perfect affection led us to repentance, how you broke our chains and led our escape from darkness into light.
And we will never forget that all this was accomplished by the power of your blood, Jesus Christ, the Son of God, the Savior of the world, the only way to salvation.
We remember with the bread and the cup till we celebrate with you in your presence.
