Something this week reminded me of an old hymn I love, “Sunshine in My Soul.”
So I looked it up to refresh my memory on the words – many of which I knew from memory. But I was particularly moved when I read the words of the second stanza:
There is music in my soul today,
A carol to my King;
And Jesus, listening, can hear
The songs I cannot sing.
I must have sung those words a hundred times in the past, yet they speak to me in a fresh, new way this time. Even with music in my soul, sometimes I still have words I cannot sing to the Father. I don’t know where to start… I don’t know what to say… I simply don’t have the words to express my thoughts.
Romans 8:26 tells us, “Likewise the Spirit helps us in our weakness. For we do not know what to pray for as we ought, but the Spirit himself intercedes for us with groanings too deep for words.”
Thank God that He sent the Holy Spirit to be our intercessor. Not only can we have a song in lives, we can have confidence that God knows the thoughts and cares in our hearts.
Eliza Hewitt, the writer of the hymn lyrics above, knew what this was all about when she penned those words, “When Jesus shows His smiling face, There is sunshine in my soul.”
Have a sunshine-filled week.
