Silence can cost everything. Most people in ministry know both sides of this. You've probably heard your name spoken with unexpected warmth after a service. You've also put in work that helped keep a ministry standing and felt the room move on as if you weren't even there. The difference is rarely talent. It's whether anyone took the time to notice. Are you a compliment camel? Some of us live like camels with compliments. We go a long time on one kind word. A text from years ago is still in the phone. A passing “that helped” still gets replayed on the drive home. We store it because we don't know when the next one is coming. That's not vanity. That's what happens when recognition feels like rain in a dry season. There's another type of compliment camel. This one rarely gives. We noticed the extra hours, the quiet save, the person who made everyone else look ready. We just never said it. Busyness, awkwardness, “they already know,” or a thin spirituality that treats human thanks as optional keeps water in the hump. One person learns to survive on almost nothing. The other withholds what would have cost almost nothing to give. How easy both paths are. Showing appreciation is simple. A text after rehearsal. A sentence that names what someone actually did. “Thank you for staying late so the slides were right.” “I saw how you handled that situation.” It only takes seconds and a little specificity. Ignoring people is just as easy. You get busy. You assume they know. You tell yourself the work is “unto the Lord,” so saying thank-you is optional. You honor the visible roles and treat the rest as infrastructure. “I meant to say something” becomes a habit of saying nothing. In an office, credit travels upward. In a church, the same few names get thanked while the people who made the night possible clean up after everyone has gone. You never really know what that person walked in carrying—the battles they fight when no one is looking, the burdens they set aside just long enough to serve. Paid or volunteer, they showed up and gave their best. A kind word will not fix everything in their lives, but it says the cost of showing up mattered. What recognition actually does. Appreciation isn't fluff. It tells a person their labor registered. That they were not interchangeable. When that lands, people stay longer, take more ownership, and recover faster after a hard week. They stop confusing “unseen” with “unneeded.” When it never lands, the work continues, but the heart starts to ration itself. Excellence becomes “good enough.” Gifted people step back. Burnout is dismissed as spiritual dryness. Sometimes it's simply the weight of never being recognized. Some are quick to say, “Don’t seek man’s praise” or “God sees.” Both can be true—and still cover those who never look around the room. Scripture doesn't pit God’s seeing against human honor. It tells us to encourage one another and give honor where honor is due. Heaven’s “well done” is not a license for the rest of us to stay silent. Work, not just worship. This same pattern shows up everywhere: the person who keeps the calendar from collapsing, catches the error, or makes other people look prepared. If you lead, recognition is part of the job. If you don't name the work, you train people to believe only the loud roles matter. That's how you lose people who hold the ministry together—and how you create compliment camels who can quote the last kind sentence they heard because it's been so long. If you are never recognized, the ache is real. Wanting a “thank you” isn't living for applause. It's wanting evidence that your effort entered someone else’s life. The difference isn't volume. It's attention. People don't need constant praise. They need noticing to be normal, so they don't have to hoard a compliment like water. Say the specific thing. Say it close to the moment. Say it to the person, not only about them later. Ask the two camel questions honestly: Do you rarely hear one? Do you rarely give one? One may explain why you feel unseen. The other may explain why someone near you does. If you've gone a long time without hearing it, that silence isn't a full measure of your worth. It's often a measure of other people’s hurry. Those of us who lead don't get to hide behind that. Ministry already asks a lot. The least we can do is not make people do it alone, unnamed, and living off the last kind word they can remember. God does see. But that's not an excuse for our silence. It's the reason our silence doesn't get the last word. If you haven't said it lately to the people who work for you, serve beside you, and make your life easier—say it. “Good job.” “Great work.” “I appreciate you.” "I believe in you." Reach out today. You'll never know the whole story they carried into the room. You'll also never know how far a sincere thank-you can go once it gets there. **[![Get 5 FREE Songs!  (with all the demos, tracks, charts, and more)](https://no-cache.hubspot.com/cta/default/2934518/ddadb60b-487e-41c1-9590-36ec1e88be7c.png)](https://cta-redirect.hubspot.com/cta/redirect/2934518/ddadb60b-487e-41c1-9590-36ec1e88be7c)** Posted in: [Prayer](https://blog.discoverworship.com/articles/topic/prayer), [Spiritual Development](https://blog.discoverworship.com/articles/topic/spiritual-development), [Faith](https://blog.discoverworship.com/articles/topic/faith) ![Jaymey Hardin](https://blog.discoverworship.com/hubfs/Jaymey%20Hardin.jpg) ### Jaymey Hardin Jaymey Hardin is a veteran leader in Christian music and family entertainment with more than 25 years of experience, widely recognized for his expertise in marketing, product development, and A&R.
