In recent years, I’ve learned to enjoy the quiet. In fact, my favorite time of day is early morning in my music room with a cup of coffee and a devotion. It’s where I can listen without any interruptions. No questions to answer. Too early for reminders I may have set. Just calm. It’s also where I can talk to the Lord and wait and listen should He want to say anything to me.
He deserves that space so He doesn’t have to talk above all the noise we’re typically surrounded by. However, it hasn’t always been that way for me. Having served on staff for years as worship leader, there were seasons where I spent more time focused on the planning and the details of the worship service and not enough moments in the presence of the Lord. Maybe you’ve been there? Or, maybe you’re there now.
Sometimes, the details can seem like a really long list you’ll never finish. And, before long it’s like there’s a loud noise in the background that becomes a distraction. Talk about a loud noise. Most often, when I call my wife, my timing is a bit off. It’s inevitable that I’ll catch her when she’s just opened the oven doors in her commercial kitchen, or when she’s pushing a bakery rack across the concrete floor. It sounds like a war zone. It always sounds worse than it is but it’s not easy to have a conversation until it gets quiet. That’s how I imagine it is with the Lord. If we’re not in a posture of listening or quiet enough to communicate with Him, I wonder if He wonders why we don’t stop for just a moment to rest in His presence.
Does that make sense? I’m encouraging you - inviting you - to find those moments - quiet moments - to be still in His presence. It’s life changing. And, it will help you in your leadership role to serve better. To lead better.
So, here’s to finding the quiet...
