Last week I mentioned to you how vital I think it is that we develop a biblical basis for our music and worship ministries. These 4 or 5 scripture passages serve to give us focus, define our vision and provide filters for new ideas. I gave you 2 Timothy 3:16 as a place to get started on all this. Here's another signifiant passage: 2 Chronicles 5:11-14.
I won't quote the entire passage here, but it ends with Then the temple of the LORD was filled with a cloud, and the priests could not perform their service because of the cloud, for the glory of the LORD filled the temple of God.
You remember the story: the Israelites, under the guidance of Solomon, were dedicating the temple and bringing the Ark of the Covenant back to its rightful place. A powerful worship service was occurring with an orchestra on one side of the altar (including 120 trumpeters!), joined by a choir, which I'm guessing was pretty big, too. Verse 13 says, “The trumpeters and singers joined in unison, as with one voice, to give praise and thanks to the LORD.” And that's when it happened – the glory of God filled the temple in the form of a cloud and everything came to a holy halt.
But here's the key (and this is important!) - it wasn't the number of musicians involved, or the fact that they were dressed in fine linen, or that they were obviously well-rehearsed that brought the glory of God into the temple. The key phrase here is in unison, as with one voice... That's what moved God to manifest Himself in a cloud. Unity.
What are you doing to build a sense of unity among members of your team? Is it based on consensus or commitment?
