It’s pretty easy to be happy and rejoice on the mountaintop. We see all around us and have a beautiful view. The valley can be a different story – we can feel confined, vulnerable, and never quite know what to expect as we walk the path.
Three weeks ago the dad of one of my best friends was told the cancer had returned. The doctor said it was inoperable and untreatable this time – likely with about 3 to 4 months left to enjoy. The shadow of death eclipsed his life sooner than expected – his funeral was this past week.
As I walked through this experience with my friend, I realized the “shadow of death” is not always physical. It can be also be financial worries looming over us, a relationship gone awry that you can’t seem to mend, an emotional or psychological need that is unfulfilled – the list goes on of things that can kill our spirit and will.
Are you in the valley of the shadow of death? Is something lurking over your shoulder that you feel could overtake you or you simply don’t know how to handle? If so, remember and cling to these words:
Even though I walk through the darkest valley, I will fear no evil, for you are with me; your rod and your staff, they comfort me. Psalm 23:4 (NIV)
Satan will attempt to use every valley experience possible to pull us down and take our eyes off the summit, so we must continue to trust God and his Word. For every valley, there is a higher plane. Do not fear – He is with you. Put your complete trust in Him as you tread the road forging onward and upward.
