Tune My Heart

Last week in rehearsal my group ended a long phrase, landing on a nice, big cadence. But there was a problem – the cadence chord was really out of tune. As is a typical rehearsal technique, I said, “Play that last chord and tune it.”

They played the isolated chord and it almost instantly came into tune. It seemed easy to play the chord in tune with that second chance. I reminded them of the need to prepare for the cadence chord and play it in tune in context with the phrase.

This example is an amazing parallel to our lives. Sometimes we may think or say, “If I could do that one more time.” While we will never eliminate all errors from our daily lives, we can certainly learn from our mistakes and do better the next time.

A long time ago God designed a plan for our mistakes. “But God demonstrates his own love for us in this: While we were still sinners, Christ died for us.” (Romans 5:8)

And because of God’s boundless love for us, we can have forgiveness. “If we confess our sins, he is faithful and just and will forgive us our sins and purify us from all unrighteousness.” (1 John 1:9)

Getting a second chance on tuning that chord in rehearsal reminded me of the opening line from a beloved hymn:

Come, Thou fount of ev’ry blessing,
TUNE my heart to sing thy grace.

This week we get another chance. Tune your heart. Sing His grace.
